watching some of these events. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is located on the
banks of the Mississippi River. It is a large scale industrial and
research hub. It has a rich history shaped by many cultural influences.
The earliest known inhabitants were Native Americans but later became a
French settlement. Recently arrived Vietnamese and Hispanic immigrants
have added to the cultural diversity of Baton. The Mardi Gras parades
are a testimony to the city's French connection while St. Patrick' Day
Parade points to the cultural traditions brought here by Irish settlers.
Cultural Extravaganza
It is also becoming an increasingly important center for arts and
theater. Major art galleries include the LSU Museum of Art, Brunner and
Gallery. The important theaters include the Baton River Center, The
Reilly Center and The Manship Theater. The town even has an orchestra.
Most things to do in Baton Rouge, particularly cultural activities, link
in some way to these venues and professional groups.

Sightseeing
Baton Rouge's diverse history has left it with many remnants of a rich
past. While the old State Capitol building is a favorite tourist site,
the city is also famous for its many old plantation villas. The Myrtles
Plantation, currently housing a B&B, is perhaps one of the most well
known old buildings in the United States. The architecture, history and
several mysterious legends about the plantation house have earned it a
place among the most interesting historic places in the country. John
Hampton Randolph built the big, imposing Nottoway House, known as an
American Castle rather than a simple plantation house, in 1859. This
tall three-storey house has 64 rooms, 165 doors and 200 windows. The
Magnolia Mound Plantation is one of the other famous old-style buildings
in the city; and if you are looking for things to do in Baton, do not
forget to attend the Project Hope Children Express at Magnolia Mound
dedicated to the contributions of African Americans to the South.
